Lubumbashi lies on the high plateau of the Katanga copper belt in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was founded in 1910 as Élisabethville, and the colonial plan still shapes the centre: a regular grid of straight streets and blocks, with long avenues crossing at right angles. Around this core, newer neighbourhoods spread in looser, less formal patterns across the plateau.
The most distinctive feature of the city is industrial. Beside the old copper works stands a huge slag heap left by more than a century of smelting, a dark hill that has become a symbol of Lubumbashi. The small Lubumbashi River crosses the urban area, and rail lines connect the city to the mines of the region and south toward Zambia.
Lubumbashi is the capital of Haut-Katanga and the economic centre of one of the world's most important copper and cobalt mining regions. It is also home to TP Mazembe, one of Africa's most successful football clubs. A Lubumbashi map poster records a city shaped by its mines, from the ordered colonial grid to the spreading districts beyond.
The centre follows the early twentieth-century plan, with straight avenues and uniform blocks that form a clear, orderly pattern at the heart of the map.
A vast mound of smelting waste beside the old copper works, it rises above the surrounding streets and is one of the city's best-known landmarks.
Tracks run through the city toward the mining towns of Katanga and southward to the Zambian border, drawing long lines across the plateau.
