Lviv's historic centre, listed by UNESCO, forms a compact knot of streets around Rynok Square, where the town hall stands at the centre. From above, the old town is dense and irregular, bounded by wider streets and boulevards that trace former fortifications, with the city spreading beyond in layers of Austro-Hungarian and later districts.
Beneath Svobody Avenue flows the Poltva River, covered over in the nineteenth century. The Opera House closes the avenue at one end. To the northeast, the green slopes of the High Castle hill overlook the city, and the Lychakiv Cemetery lies to the east, its paths winding among trees.
