Malatya lies in eastern Anatolia on a broad plain near the Euphrates, with mountains rising to the south. From above the modern city is laid out in fairly regular blocks and long avenues. Around it, orchards and farmland take up much of the surrounding ground, so the urban shape fades gradually into cultivated land.
Malatya is famous for apricots, and the region supplies a large share of the world's dried apricots. Just outside the city, the ancient mound of Arslantepe was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 for its evidence of early state organisation. The older settlement, Battalgazi, lies a short distance to the north.
