Manari lies in the interior of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid Sertão do Moxotó. The urban area is small and compact. A modest grid of streets gathers around the centre, and at the edges the roads quickly become unpaved tracks leading into open country. That space is caatinga, the dry thorn-scrub landscape of north-eastern Brazil. Most of the municipality is rural, with scattered farmsteads, small reservoirs and tracks linking distant communities.
