Marang sits on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, south of Kuala Terengganu, where the Marang River meets the South China Sea. From above, water is everywhere. The river winds through the town to a sheltered estuary, a long sandy coastline runs north and south, and small islands lie offshore.
The town is best known as the jetty for boats to Pulau Kapas, a small island popular for snorkelling and quiet beaches. Marang has a long fishing tradition, and the river mouth is still busy with boats. Coastal roads link it with the state capital and the rest of the east coast.
