Mariana lies in the hills of central Minas Gerais, a short distance east of Ouro Preto. It grew from a gold-mining camp at the end of the seventeenth century and became the first town and first capital of Minas Gerais, as well as the seat of its first bishopric. Its historic centre is among the most important colonial ensembles in Brazil.
The old town is more regular than many mining settlements, with streets laid out between squares and churches. The best-known view is the Praça Minas Gerais, where the churches of São Francisco de Assis and Nossa Senhora do Carmo stand side by side. Around the centre, the town spreads along valleys between steep hills.
A Mariana map poster shows the baroque core with the rest of the town following the terrain outward. The surrounding hills, streams and old mining roads frame it, a reminder of how gold shaped this part of Brazil.
The historic core has a fairly orderly layout for a mining town, with streets running between squares, churches and the old cathedral, a clear pattern in the middle of the map.
The square where two baroque churches stand side by side is the town's best-known view. On the map, it is a small open space among tight blocks.
Newer districts follow valleys between the steep hills of the region, so the town's outline branches out irregularly from the older centre.
