Marly-le-Roi lies west of Paris in the Yvelines, on high ground between the Forest of Marly and the slopes that fall toward the Seine. Its map is dominated by the Domaine national de Marly. This is the park of the château Louis XIV built as a private retreat. The house itself was demolished after the Revolution.
Even without the château, the park's formal geometry survives: long axes, terraces and the traces of former water basins, set into the slope. Around it, the town's streets are winding and residential, with older lanes near the historic centre and quieter suburban streets spreading toward the forest edge.
The Seine and the site of the Machine de Marly, which once pumped water up the hillside for the royal gardens, lie just below the town. Alfred Sisley painted the area repeatedly. A Marly-le-Roi map poster captures that meeting of French formal landscape design and a small, green commuter town.
The former royal park stretches across the slope in a long, symmetrical composition. Its axes and terraces give the poster a clear central spine of classical geometry.
A large state forest runs along the edge of town. It adds a broad, quiet expanse crossed by straight hunting rides, which frames the streets on one side.
The land falls toward the river, and roads wind down the hillside. This gives the map a sense of descent from forest plateau to valley floor.
