Maroua is the capital of Cameroon's Far North region, and from above it reads as a low, wide town laid out across the Sudano-Sahelian plain. Seasonal rivers, known locally as mayos, cut sandy channels through the urban area, and the street network bends around them rather than following a strict grid.
