Matthews lies in the southeast of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, on the edge of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The town began as a stop on the railroad, and the old downtown still lines up along the tracks. It is a short grid of streets with low commercial buildings, in sharp contrast to what surrounds it.
Beyond that small centre, the map changes character. Postwar and modern subdivisions spread outward in loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs, joined by a few main arterial roads.
