Mauguio lies just east of Montpellier, between the city and the lagoons of the Languedoc coast. Its historic centre is one of the more striking shapes on any map of the area. The old streets form a rounded core, curving around the site of the medieval mound, and newer neighbourhoods spread out beyond that ring.
To the south lies the Étang de l'Or, also known as the Étang de Mauguio, a broad shallow lagoon edged with reeds and marshland.
