Ko e mape
Medellín fills the Aburrá Valley in the Colombian Andes, a narrow valley about 1,500 metres above sea level. The Medellín River runs along its floor from south to north, and the city follows it in a long ribbon, with the valley walls rising steeply on both sides. On a map that shape is unmistakable: a dense linear core and neighbourhoods reaching up the hillsides.
Medellín has Colombia's only metro system, running along the valley beside the river, and it pioneered the use of cable cars, the Metrocable, as public transport connecting hillside neighbourhoods with the network. Outdoor escalators in Comuna 13 did the same on a smaller scale. These lines show up on the map as straight strokes crossing the curved streets of the slopes.
In the centre, Plaza Botero displays bronze sculptures donated by the artist Fernando Botero, and El Poblado spreads over the southeastern slopes. Known as the City of Eternal Spring for its mild climate year round, Medellín is a place people grow attached to quickly. A Medellín map poster shows the whole valley, from river to ridgelines, as one elegant, elongated form.
The Medellín River and the highways and metro line alongside it form the city's spine, a long, straight line running the length of the valley.
Neighbourhoods climb the valley walls in winding, irregular streets that contrast with the more regular blocks near the river, giving the edges of the map a rich texture.
Cable car routes rise from metro stations up the slopes in straight lines, a distinctive layer that marks Medellín's approach to urban transport.
