Medgidia sits on the rolling plateau of Dobruja, in southeastern Romania, and the most striking feature of its map is man-made. The Danube–Black Sea Canal passes right through the town, a long, straight band of water that separates the districts on either bank, crossed by a small number of bridges.
The town's name recalls the Ottoman sultan Abdulmejid, and its history as a mixed Romanian, Turkish and Tatar community shows in the mosque near the centre. Medgidia also grew as a railway junction and an industrial town, with cement production long important here.
