Mersin runs along the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey for many kilometres, and its map is essentially a long band between the sea and the hills. The coastline is fairly straight and lined by a seafront promenade and parks, and the main streets run parallel to it. Behind them the land rises gradually toward the foothills of the Taurus Mountains.
Near the centre, the port's piers and breakwaters interrupt the smooth shoreline. It is one of the largest harbour complexes on the Turkish Mediterranean. The older districts around it form a denser pattern, while high-rise residential areas extend east and west along the coast. Streams from the hills cross the city in narrow channels on their way to the sea.
Mersin is a relatively young city that grew quickly as a port from the nineteenth century onward, and it is the capital of Mersin Province. The surrounding plain is known for its citrus orchards. A Mersin map poster captures the city's clear linear form, with the sea on one side, the hills on the other and the city drawn out between them.
Parks and a long coastal walkway follow the shoreline. Together they form a continuous edge where the city meets the Mediterranean on the southern side of the map.
Piers and breakwaters project into the sea near the centre. This is the only place where strong geometric shapes break the otherwise smooth coastline.
Main avenues run parallel to the coast, and residential districts extend far to the east and west. As a result the city reads as a long, narrow band.
