Ko e mape
Mezgor'e (also written Mezhgorye) is a closed town in the Southern Urals of Bashkortostan. It lies in forested mountain country near Yamantau, one of the highest peaks in the range. On the map the town is a small, tidy block of streets and apartment rows set in a valley. Ridges and woodland surround it, and few roads lead in or out.
The town was built in the Soviet period as a closed settlement. It still has that status, with entry restricted, and the purpose of the large works associated with the nearby mountain has long been a subject of speculation. The street plan shows its origins. The layout is regular and deliberate, like a planned town, and quite unlike the loose pattern of older Ural villages.
A Mezgor'e map poster is mostly landscape. The built-up area takes up only a modest part of the sheet, and the rest is the texture of streams and valleys. Mountain roads and rivers curve through the forest. The effect is of a single orderly island in a very large wilderness.
Residential blocks and streets are set out in a regular arrangement on the valley floor. This clear geometry stands out against the irregular terrain around it.
The town sits between forested ridges of the Southern Urals. Rivers and access roads have to follow the valleys, which gives the map strong curving lines.
Almost everything beyond the town edge is woodland without streets. On a minimalist print this empty space isolates the settlement and gives it a striking presence.

Ko e ha Mezgor'e
People who grew up in Mezgor'e or served there often have no easy way to go back. A map on the wall keeps the shape of the town close. It is a quiet record of a place few outsiders have seen.
You can set the title, add a subtitle such as the years you lived there, and keep or edit the coordinates line. Pick from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits the forest well.
