Michelena is a town in the state of Táchira in western Venezuela, in the Andean highlands. Like many towns founded in the region, its centre is organised around a plaza and a church, with a regular grid of streets extending outward. The ground here is not flat, though, and on the map the grid bends and narrows where it meets the slopes around the town.
Beyond the edge of the streets the landscape is steep and folded, with roads winding up and down the hillsides to connect Michelena with neighbouring towns and farms. Streams run through the valleys below, and patches of cultivated land cling to the slopes. Michelena is also the seat of the municipality that bears the same name.
