Mizil lies in Prahova County, in southern Romania, where the flat Wallachian plain meets the first low hills of the Subcarpathians. On the map, the town is long and regular. The main road between Ploiești and Buzău runs through it, and a railway follows a parallel line nearby.
North of the town, the ground rises toward the Dealu Mare hills, one of the country's best-known wine-growing areas. To the south, the plain opens into large, flat fields. That makes Mizil a town on the boundary between two landscapes.
