Morón lies in the north of Ciego de Ávila province in central Cuba, on flat land between the island's interior and its northern coast. The town has a clear, regular grid of blocks, with streets crossing at right angles around its central square. Railway lines reach the town, and main roads lead north toward the coast and the offshore cays.
Morón is known as the Ciudad del Gallo, the city of the rooster, after an old saying about a rooster of Morón, and a rooster statue stands in the town as its emblem. Nearby is the Laguna de la Leche, the largest natural lake in Cuba, named for the pale, milky colour of its water.
