Ko e mape
Mudu lies in Wuzhong District on the western side of Suzhou, between the city and the eastern shore of Lake Tai. The map shows the classic pattern of a Jiangnan water town. Narrow canals run through the old centre, lined by lanes and crossed by small bridges. To the west the land rises into a group of wooded hills, and beyond them lies the open expanse of the lake.
Mudu has a history of more than two thousand years, and tradition links it to the ancient state of Wu. Lingyan Hill, just north of the town, is crowned by a Buddhist temple and has long been a pilgrimage and sightseeing site. The old town also keeps classical private gardens, and its canal streets remain a popular draw for visitors from Suzhou.
A Mudu map poster brings together the fine canal network of the old town, the rounded contours of the hills and the new districts spreading towards Suzhou. The mix of water, hills and dense streets gives the map an unusually layered composition, clear and elegant in monochrome.

The wooded hill north of the town breaks the flat plain with an open, unbuilt area. It is topped by a long-established Buddhist temple.
West of the hills, the land runs down to Lake Tai. The lake's wide shoreline gives the wider map a calm, open edge.
