Murtajāpur lies in the Akola district of Maharashtra, on the flat black-soil plain of Vidarbha, a region known for cotton farming. The town grew around its station on the main line between Mumbai and Nagpur. From above, the tracks form the strongest line on the map, with streets and neighbourhoods spread out on either side.
Murtajāpur is also known as the junction of the Shakuntala Railway, a narrow-gauge line built in the British era to carry cotton from the surrounding districts to the main line. Its routes ran north to Achalpur and south to Yavatmal, and the railway became a symbol of the region's farming economy and of how long some colonial-era infrastructure stayed in use.
A Murtajāpur map poster shows a town organised around movement: rail lines crossing and branching, roads converging on the station area, and a denser pattern of lanes in the older market quarters. Beyond the edges, straight field boundaries and village roads fill the plain, giving the composition a calm, horizontal balance.
Rail lines run through the town and meet near the station, forming bold intersecting strokes that divide the map and anchor the street pattern around them.
The narrow-gauge Shakuntala Railway starts here, its tracks leading away from the main line toward the cotton-growing districts to the north and south.
Closely packed lanes near the centre mark the older commercial part of town, a finer texture that contrasts with the open plain around it.
