Bhusawal lies in the Jalgaon district of northern Maharashtra, close to the Tapi River. From above, the town is shaped by railways more than by anything else. Lines arrive from several directions and meet at a large junction. Around it are wide yards, workshops and railway colonies laid out in orderly rows. The older town grows around this core in a denser, irregular pattern.
Bhusawal is one of the most important junctions on the Central Railway and the headquarters of a railway division. Trains between Mumbai and northern and eastern India pass through here. The town also has a large thermal power station. The surrounding countryside is fertile black-soil farmland, and the Jalgaon district is well known for its bananas. The Tapi forms a broad natural line close to the town.
A Bhusawal map poster shows a town built around movement. The rail lines fan out, the yards are long and parallel, the residential blocks are orderly and the old bazaar streets are compact. The river curves along one side. In black and white, the railway infrastructure becomes an intricate, almost diagrammatic drawing, and it has special appeal for anyone with family ties to the railways.
Several main lines meet at Bhusawal. Their tracks, yards and sidings spread across the centre of the map in long, parallel strokes.
Planned housing built for railway staff sits in orderly rows near the lines. It contrasts with the denser, irregular old town.
The river runs close to the town and forms a wide, curving natural line across the landscape.
