Ko e mape
Nandurbar lies in the north-western corner of Maharashtra, close to the Gujarat border, in the region historically known as Khandesh. On a map the town sits on fairly level ground, its older core of close-set streets surrounded by newer residential areas, with a railway line passing along one side. The Tapi river flows to the south, and farmland spreads across the plain.
North of the town the land rises into the Satpura range, whose hills and forests are home to large Adivasi communities, many of them Bhil. Nandurbar became a separate district in 1998, and the town serves as its administrative centre. Roads lead out toward Dhule, Surat and the hill station of Toranmal high in the Satpuras.
The town keeps a strong rural character, with markets that draw people in from surrounding villages. A Nandurbar map poster shows a district headquarters where plain meets hills, with a dense old centre, a network of roads reaching into the countryside, and the railway linking it toward Surat in one direction and Jalgaon in the other.
The historic centre is a tight cluster of short lanes and small blocks, the densest texture on the poster and the oldest part of the settlement.
The line between Surat and Jalgaon passes the town in a long, even stroke, with the station area marking one edge of the central district.
Roads heading north begin to climb toward the Satpura range and settlement grows sparse, leaving calm open space at the top of the map that balances the busier centre.
