Najrān lies in south-western Saudi Arabia, near the border with Yemen, in a broad valley known as Wadi Najran. The city follows the valley for many kilometres, so from above it looks like a long, linear settlement rather than a compact grid, with farms and palm groves filling the valley floor and bare mountains rising on either side.
Traditional mud-brick houses, some several storeys tall with whitewashed trim around their windows and parapets, still stand among the date palms, while newer districts are laid out in regular blocks along the main roads. The Emara Palace, a fortified mud-brick building in the old centre, is one of the city's best-known landmarks.
Nearby lies Al-Ukhdood, an archaeological site with the remains of an ancient settlement that was an important stop on the incense trade routes. A Najrān map poster shows how the city grew around water in a dry landscape: a green ribbon of fields and streets drawn between the empty lines of the mountains.
The valley runs through the length of the city and sets its whole shape. On the poster it appears as a long corridor of fields and streets between open, mountainous ground.
Date palm farms and irrigated plots fill the valley floor between districts. In black and white they become a fine, irregular texture that sets the older areas apart.
Newer neighbourhoods follow a regular grid of straight roads and blocks. Their order contrasts with the organic pattern of the farms and older settlements along the wadi.

Najrān is a city shaped by water and heritage, and those with family ties to the region often want a way to keep its valley close. The map's long, linear form is striking and easy to recognise.
Add a title, a family name or a date in the subtitle, and set the coordinates to a house or farm. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download six sizes for $9 or order a matte print.
