Sanaa lies in a highland basin of western Yemen at roughly 2,200 metres, one of the highest capital cities in the world. On the map the old city is the centre of gravity: a tight, irregular mass of lanes, courtyards and gardens once enclosed by walls, surrounded by newer districts that spread across the valley floor towards the mountains.
The Old City of Sanaa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its multi-storey tower houses of rammed earth and fired brick, their windows framed with white gypsum decoration. Bab al-Yemen, the main southern gate, opens onto the market streets, and the Saila, a seasonal riverbed, runs through the old city and serves as a road when it is dry.
A Sanaa map poster holds the contrast between the ancient centre and the planned roads around it. Jabal Nuqum rises to the east, leaving open ground at the edge of the drawing, and the long line of the Saila cuts through the city from south to north. The Saila
A seasonal riverbed crosses the city from south to north, used as a road for most of the year, and it shows as a long curving line beside the old city.
Jabal Nuqum
The mountain to the east of the city closes the valley, and on the map its slopes appear as open ground where the street pattern stops abruptly.
