Nanchang is split by the Gan River, the largest river in Jiangxi, which flows north through the city on its way to Poyang Lake. On the map the river is wide and pale, crossed by a series of long bridges. The historic city grew on the eastern bank, while the western bank, Honggutan, is a newer district of broad avenues and large regular blocks.
The older eastern side is threaded with water. Several small lakes lie inside the former city limits, among them East, West, South and North lakes, and larger bodies such as Qingshan Lake spread further out. Ponds and channels break the street pattern into irregular pieces, and beyond the city the low plain continues northeast toward Poyang Lake.
Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province. The Nanchang Uprising of 1 August 1927 is commemorated as the founding of the People's Liberation Army, and the Tengwang Pavilion, celebrated in classical Chinese literature, stands on the east bank of the Gan. A Nanchang map poster shows the city across its great river, old lakes on one side and planned districts on the other.
Hundreds of metres wide as it passes the centre, the river forms a dominant band across the map, crossed by several long road bridges linking the two halves.
East, West, South and North lakes sit within the old city, small bodies of water that give the eastern districts a soft, broken street pattern.
On the western bank, a planned new city of wide boulevards and large regular blocks faces the old town directly across the river.

Ko e ha Nanchang
Nanchang is a city of contrasts that shows clearly on paper: tight older streets and quiet lakes facing a new district of straight avenues across the water. It makes a thoughtful gift for someone from Jiangxi, or a record of time spent studying or working there.
