Wuxue stretches along the north bank of the Yangtze in eastern Hubei. The main urban area lies close to the river, its streets running parallel to the bank and climbing slightly toward the hills behind. From above, the broad, gently curving Yangtze forms the dominant feature, framing the city along its southern edge and setting the direction of almost every major road.
Wuxue is a county-level city administered by Huanggang, and it was long known by its earlier name, Guangji. Its position on the Yangtze made it a traditional river port and crossing point, and today a modern bridge carries a highway across the river from here toward the southern bank.
Inland from the river, the landscape turns to low hills, farmland and lakes, with water scattered across the countryside in irregular shapes. A Wuxue map poster shows how the city holds to the river's edge, a narrow band of streets between the great waterway and the rolling country behind it, a composition built on the contrast between line and open space.
China's longest river sweeps past the city in a wide, smooth band, occupying a large part of the map and setting the orientation of the streets alongside it.
The urban grid follows the bank closely, with long roads running parallel to the water and shorter streets leading down to the river.
Behind the city, ponds, lakes and low wooded hills create a scattered, irregular pattern that contrasts with the ordered streets near the river.
