Nanxi is a district of Yibin in southern Sichuan, set along the Yangtze a short distance downstream from where the Min and Jinsha rivers meet. On a map the town follows the river closely, with streets lined up parallel to the water and hills rising behind them, so that the built-up area forms a long, narrow band rather than a compact circle.
Yibin is often described as the first city on the Yangtze, since the river takes that name at the confluence. Nanxi shares that setting on a smaller scale, with an older riverfront core and newer blocks added along the banks as the area has expanded.
