Ko e mape
Neyshābūr sits on a broad, fertile plain in north-eastern Iran, with the Binalud mountains rising to the north and separating it from Mashhad. The city's modern streets are laid out in wide, straight lines, forming a clear grid with long avenues and roundabouts, while fields and orchards spread out around it across the plain.
For centuries this was one of the great cities of Khorasan, a major stop on the Silk Road and a centre of learning and craft, known for its pottery and for the turquoise mined in the nearby hills. The medieval city was devastated by earthquakes and by the Mongol invasion in 1221, and the present city grew up beside its ancient remains.
Neyshābūr is also the resting place of two great Persian poets. The tomb of Omar Khayyam, mathematician and author of the Rubaiyat, stands in a garden on the edge of the city, not far from the tomb of the Sufi poet Attar. A Neyshābūr map poster traces the geometry of a city that still honours its scholars and its long past.
Wide, straight avenues and roundabouts organise the city into large regular blocks, giving the map a strong and calm geometric structure.
The garden around Omar Khayyam's tomb appears as an open green space near the edge of the city, a quiet counterpoint to the surrounding streets.
Around the city the flat, cultivated plain stretches in all directions, with the Binalud range forming a natural boundary to the north.
