Ngara is the main town of Ngara District in Tanzania's Kagera Region, in the northwest corner of the country close to Rwanda and Burundi. The land here is hilly and green, and the town spreads along the higher ground. Its roads follow the ridges and connect it with the border crossings and the rest of Kagera.
In the mid-1990s, the Ngara area became widely known when large refugee camps were set up here for people fleeing violence in Rwanda. Today the map shows a quieter pattern. There is a central group of streets, scattered settlement on the surrounding slopes, and a few longer roads leaving town toward the Kagera river valley and the Rusumo crossing to Rwanda.
