Olavanna is a panchayat area on the southern outskirts of Kozhikode, on the Malabar coast of Kerala. Like much of this coast, it does not look like a town with a centre and an edge. Houses are scattered through dense greenery, connected by narrow lanes that twist around compound walls, paddy land and small waterways. Only a few main roads cut straight through.
From above, this creates a fine, branching street network, more like the veins of a leaf than a grid. Low-lying wet ground and streams divide the area. The Arabian Sea coast and the river mouths around Kozhikode are close by, and the city itself grows denser to the north.
