Few large cities have a shape as distinctive as Patna. It runs east to west along the southern bank of the Ganges for many kilometres, but in most places it is only a few kilometres deep. On a map the river forms one wide edge along the north, with sandbanks and channels shifting across it. The city is pressed into a thin band below.
The older quarter, Patna City, lies at the eastern end, with narrower and less regular lanes. The planned western districts around Gandhi Maidan and Bailey Road follow straighter lines. Railway tracks run parallel to the river and divide the city into long strips. The Mahatma Gandhi Setu crosses the Ganges toward Hajipur and is one of the longest river bridges in India.
A Patna map poster also traces one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. As Pataliputra it was the capital of the Maurya and Gupta empires, and the city still follows the river that made it important. In black and white, its long east-west form gives the composition one strong, simple line from edge to edge.
The river forms the whole northern edge of the city, wide and braided with sandbars. At Patna it is so wide that much of the poster becomes open space against the dense streets below.
A large open ground near the centre shows up as a clear blank space in the street pattern. It has long been the site of the city's major public gatherings.
The long road bridge reaches north across the Ganges to Hajipur, a thin straight line over water and sandbanks. It is among the longest river bridges in the country.
