Muzaffarpur lies on the Gangetic plain in northern Bihar, on the banks of the Burhi Gandak River. The land is almost perfectly flat, and the river loops across it in broad curves, with old channels and oxbow lakes still visible around the city. The urban area is a dense cluster of lanes and markets that spreads out along the main roads leading out of town.
The district is famous for its lychees. The Shahi litchi of Muzaffarpur has a geographical indication tag, and orchards cover much of the surrounding countryside. On the map they appear as open ground dotted with villages and field tracks. Beyond them, the plain continues almost unbroken toward Nepal in the north and the Ganges in the south.
The city is a regional centre for trade, education and administration, and an important railway junction in north Bihar. It is also linked to the young revolutionary Khudiram Bose, whose 1908 attack aimed at a British magistrate took place here. A Muzaffarpur map poster captures the dense town against its river and the wide plain around it.
The river meanders past the city in wide curves. It leaves crescent-shaped lakes and old channels that form the most expressive lines on the map.
The older core is a tight mesh of lanes, bazaars and small squares. Larger roads cut through it toward the railway station and the edges of town.
Several rail lines meet at the city. They draw long, straight strokes across the plain in different directions and give the map a clear sense of connection.
