Pauini sits in the southwest of Amazonas state, on the Purus River, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon. The town is reached mainly by river and air, and the map reflects that. There is a compact grid of streets on the bank, and almost everything around it is water or forest.
The Purus winds in wide, looping meanders, leaving oxbow lakes and old channels behind as its course shifts. From above, these curves and crescents are the main design, and the town is a small, orderly patch placed along the outside of one bend.
