Pingnan is the seat of Pingnan County in eastern Guangxi, part of Guigang prefecture. The town lies on the Xun River, a section of the Pearl River system that carries boats between inland Guangxi and Guangdong. From above, the wide river forms a strong curve, and the town fills the flatter land along its banks.
The county is largely rural, with rice fields, orchards and forested hills, and river transport has long shaped its economy. Newer districts and bridges have extended the town across the water, while older streets remain close to the riverbanks.
