Porteiras is a municipality in the far south of Ceará, in the Cariri region, close to the border with Pernambuco. The area lies at the foot of the Chapada do Araripe. This long, flat-topped plateau rises above the sertão, and its springs make the Cariri noticeably greener than much of the surrounding northeast.
