Rāikot is a town in Ludhiana district, Punjab, on the flat alluvial plain between the Sutlej and the drier country to the south. The land here is intensively farmed, and the fields around the town look almost like a grid from above. That grid is one of the strongest features of the map.
The town has an important place in Sikh history. It is linked to the local chief Rai Kalha, who sheltered Guru Gobind Singh, and that episode is remembered at Gurdwara Tahliana Sahib. The older centre forms a compact knot of streets, with newer colonies spreading out along the roads.
