Renxian lies in the rural northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly country on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin. The land here is folded into long ridges running roughly northeast to southwest, with broad valleys between them. On a map this shows as a strong grain: roads, streams and settlements all tend to line up along the same direction.
The town is small, and its streets gather along a main road with buildings packed close on both sides. Beyond the edge of town, the map breaks into a quilt of small fields, ponds and footpaths.
