Riedstadt is not one town but a federation of five villages: Goddelau, Wolfskehlen, Crumstadt, Erfelden and Leeheim, merged in 1977. On the map that history is easy to see. Five separate clusters of streets are scattered across the flat Ried plain and linked by country roads through open farmland.
To the west, the landscape changes. The Old Rhine loops around the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue, one of the largest nature reserves in Hesse, made up of floodplain forest and meadows. Riedstadt is also known as the birthplace of the writer Georg Büchner, who was born in Goddelau in 1813.

A former arm of the Rhine curves around the Kühkopf reserve on the western edge. It adds a large, flowing shape to the flat plain.
