Rishon LeTsiyyon was founded in 1882 by early Jewish settlers, one of the first agricultural colonies of that period, and its name means first to Zion. The original settlement survives as a compact historic centre inland, where short, narrow streets reflect the scale of a nineteenth-century village rather than a modern city of a quarter of a million people.
The city grew westward in a long band, and the map shows it clearly. Newer neighbourhoods with broader roads and curving residential streets extend toward the sea, ending at a strip of sand dunes and Mediterranean shoreline. Major highways cross the city from north to south, cutting it into distinct sections that read like layers on a Rishon LeTsiyyon map poster.
The old centre is also home to one of the country's earliest wineries, established with the support of Baron Edmond de Rothschild at the end of the nineteenth century.
