Ko e mape
Roanne sits on the left bank of the Loire in the north of the Loire department, where the river leaves its gorges and enters a broader plain. Water shapes the town's plan. The Loire runs along its eastern side, and the Canal de Roanne à Digoin begins at a large harbour basin near the centre, then heads north in a long, straight line parallel to the river.
Roanne grew as a river port and later as a textile town. Its centre combines an older core near the river with the wider, straight streets of the nineteenth century. Across France the name is also closely linked with the Troisgros family, whose restaurant made the town a destination for food lovers for more than half a century.
A Roanne map poster gives the river and the canal equal weight. The Loire traces a wide, gently curving line, the canal and its port form a sharp geometric shape, and the town spreads between and beyond them. Bridges cross to Le Coteau on the opposite bank, giving the composition a clear structure and a strong sense of place.

Bridges link Roanne with Le Coteau across the Loire. The broad river gives the eastern side of the map a strong natural edge.
Wide, straight streets laid out as the town grew in the industrial era cut through the older centre, creating a clear hierarchy of streets.
