Romainville is in Seine-Saint-Denis, on the eastern side of Paris, where the land rises onto a plateau above the city. From above, the town is a close mesh of streets, older houses and apartment blocks. Parts of the old village core remain, and roads run down the slopes towards neighbouring communes.
One of its defining features is the Fort de Romainville, one of the nineteenth-century forts built around Paris. It was used as an internment and deportation site during the Second World War.
