Rostock lies in north-eastern Germany along the Warnow, which widens into a long estuary before reaching the Baltic Sea. The old town sits on the southern bank at the upper end of that estuary, an oval of streets once enclosed by walls, with the massive tower of St Mary's Church rising above the rooftops. From above, the Warnow runs through the whole city like a spine.
Downstream the city follows both banks of the river toward the coast, past industrial docks, the overseas port and large housing estates, until it reaches Warnemünde, a seaside district with a lighthouse, a wide beach and a busy cruise terminal. The result is a long, stretched city whose map joins a medieval centre to open sea.
