Saguenay stretches along the Saguenay River in Quebec, where the river leaves the lowlands of the Lac-Saint-Jean region and enters a deep, cliff-lined fjord on its way to the St. Lawrence. From above, the city is less a single centre than a chain of districts on both banks, linked by bridges and separated by wide stretches of water, forest and farmland.
The present city was formed in 2002 by merging Chicoutimi, Jonquière, La Baie and several smaller municipalities. Chicoutimi, with its steep streets above the river, is the historic and administrative heart. Jonquière grew around aluminium production at Arvida, and La Baie lies on a bay branching off the fjord. In 1996 a severe flood struck the region and reshaped parts of these valleys.
A Saguenay map poster shows how water organises the city: the river bending through the districts, tributaries cutting down from the plateau and the fjord opening toward the east. It is an unusual subject, a municipality whose shape comes from glacial valleys and industrial history rather than from a single downtown grid.
East of the urban districts the river narrows into the Saguenay Fjord, flanked by high cliffs, and the map shifts from a web of streets to a single long ribbon of water.
The old centre of Chicoutimi climbs steeply from the riverbank, its streets stepping up the hillside in short blocks, with bridges reaching across to the north shore.
In Jonquière, the Arvida district was laid out as a planned town for aluminium workers, and its deliberate, curving street pattern stands out clearly from the neighbourhoods around it.

Ko e ha Saguenay
Many people in Saguenay still identify with Chicoutimi, Jonquière or La Baie. A single map showing all three along the river is a good way to hold the old towns and the new city together on one wall.
Set your own title, perhaps a district name, add a subtitle and a date, and pick the style that suits the room: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Six print sizes are included in the digital download.
