Sambava is a town on the northeastern coast of Madagascar and the capital of the Sava region. The region's name is formed from the initials of its main towns, Sambava, Antalaha, Vohemar and Andapa. From above, Sambava stretches along a straight, sandy coastline, with the town grid set just behind the beach and the Indian Ocean filling one side of the map.
The Sava region is the heart of Madagascar's vanilla production, and much of the world's vanilla is grown in the surrounding countryside. On the map, the land around the town is threaded with rivers and small roads leading inland towards plantations and forest. A river mouth near the town breaks the coastline, adding a natural curve to the otherwise straight shore.
A Sambava map poster emphasises the simple, strong structure of the place: coast, town and river. The shoreline gives the composition a firm edge, while the streets and rivers inland add texture. In Blueprint or Noir, the contrast between sea and land becomes especially striking.
A long, nearly straight sandy coastline runs along the town, giving the map a clean edge where the dense streets meet open water.
A river reaches the sea near the town, breaking the coastline with a natural curve and creating a small estuary on the map.
Roads and rivers lead inland from Sambava towards the plantations of the Sava region, one of the world's main vanilla-growing areas.

Ko e ha Sambava
Sambava is far from the usual travel routes, and those who have lived, worked or travelled there tend to keep a strong attachment to it. A map of the town is a thoughtful keepsake for anyone connected to Madagascar or to the vanilla trade.
