Sandaohezi is a town in northern Xinjiang, on the southern edge of the Junggar Basin where meltwater from the Tian Shan supports farming in otherwise dry land. From above, the settlement appears as a compact built-up area surrounded by a highly regular pattern of fields, shelterbelts and irrigation channels.
This part of Xinjiang was developed largely through planned agriculture, and the geometry shows it: long straight roads, rectangular plots and canals that run in parallel lines toward the basin. Beyond the cultivated land, the map becomes sparse, reflecting the steppe and desert that surround the oasis.
