Sangju lies in the northwest of Gyeongsangbuk-do, in a broad basin surrounded by low mountains. The city centre is small and compact, with a regular pattern of streets. Around it, rice paddies and orchards spread out in neat rectangles across the valley floor, and villages sit at the foot of the hills.
The Nakdong River, the longest river in South Korea, runs along the eastern part of the municipality. It meanders through wide floodplains, with weirs and river parks along its banks.
