Sankarankovil, in Tenkasi district of southern Tamil Nadu, grew around the Sankaranarayanar temple, and the map still shows it. The temple compound forms a large rectangle near the centre, with streets tracing its edges in the manner of many Tamil temple towns. Beyond this core, lanes and newer housing spread out over flat, open country dotted with tanks and fields.
The temple is known for its presiding form, Sankaranarayanar, which unites Shiva and Vishnu in a single image, and each year the Aadi Thapasu festival draws large crowds of pilgrims. The Western Ghats rise some distance to the west, while the land immediately around the town is given over to dry-land farming watered by rain and irrigation tanks.
A Sankarankovil map poster brings out the order that a temple lends to a town: a strong central block, streets that wrap around it, and roads leading away to neighbouring villages. Rendered in fine black lines, the plan has the calm symmetry of a diagram while still holding the irregular growth of a working market town.
The Sankaranarayanar temple occupies a broad walled rectangle at the heart of town, the single largest shape on the map and the point from which the street pattern unfolds.
Streets follow the edges of the temple enclosure before branching outward, a pattern common to Tamil temple towns and easy to trace from above.
Around the edge of town, irrigation tanks appear as irregular open shapes among field boundaries, marking how water is stored in this dry part of the south.

For devotees who have walked these streets during a festival, or for families whose roots lie in Tenkasi district, a map of the town holds memories that a photograph can miss. It suits a prayer room, a hallway or a quiet corner of a study.
