Sanmiao is a town in Chongqing municipality, set in the hilly country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. The landscape here is a patchwork of low rounded hills and narrow valleys, and the map follows it closely: roads bend with the contours, and houses cluster along them in small groups rather than filling a regular grid.
Much of the surrounding land is farmed, and the hillsides are shaped into terraces and paddy fields that follow the slopes in curving bands.
