Santa Barbara sits on one of the few stretches of the California coast that faces south, on a narrow plain between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific. On the map, the city's grid is set at an angle to north, with State Street running straight from the shore up through downtown towards the foothills.
After an earthquake in 1925, much of downtown was rebuilt in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, and white walls and red tile roofs now define the city's character. Mission Santa Barbara, often called the Queen of the Missions, stands on the rising ground above the grid, with the foothills and canyons behind.
A Santa Barbara map poster shows the city's setting with unusual clarity. Stearns Wharf reaches out into the water, the harbour and breakwater mark the western shore, the grid runs inland in tidy blocks, and the streets begin to curve and loosen as they reach the Riviera and the lower slopes of the mountains.
The city's main street runs in a straight line from the waterfront through downtown, the central axis around which the rotated grid is organised.
The historic wharf extends into the Pacific at the foot of State Street, and the harbour and breakwater to the west give the shoreline a distinct shape.
Above downtown, streets wind across the hillside of the Riviera towards the Mission and the mountains, a looser pattern than the grid below.

Ko e ha Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is a city people fall for: students at UCSB, couples married at the Mission or on the coast, and families who have spent summers by the beach. A map of the grid, the wharf and the hills keeps that memory in view.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a wedding date or a graduation year. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Sand suits the coast particularly well.
