Ko e mape
Santiago Ixcuintla lies on the fertile coastal plain of Nayarit, on the Río Grande de Santiago a short distance before it reaches the Pacific. The town is laid out as a fairly regular grid centred on its main square and church. The map shows it pressed close to the river, whose broad channel and sandbars form its most striking feature.
The land around it is flat and intensively farmed, with fields divided by roads, canals and drainage channels. The area has long been known for tobacco and other crops grown in the river's rich soils. Toward the coast, the plain breaks into lagoons, estuaries and mangroves, a watery landscape that continues all the way to the sea.
The municipality also includes Mexcaltitán, a small island village in a coastal lagoon that legend sometimes links to Aztlán, the mythical homeland of the Aztecs. A Santiago Ixcuintla map poster focuses on the town itself, with its grid, its river and the ordered farmland around it, a clear portrait of a working riverside community in western Mexico.
The wide river runs alongside the town, and its channel, banks and sandbars create broad, flowing shapes that dominate one side of the map.
Streets form a regular grid around the main square, a typical Mexican town plan that reads very clearly when seen from above.
Flat fields divided by roads and irrigation channels surround the town, forming a geometric pattern that stretches toward the coast.
