Schleswig sits at the inner end of the Schlei, a long, narrow arm of the Baltic that reaches far inland. On a map the town traces the northern shoreline in a shallow curve. The water lies open to the south and east, and the built-up streets thin out toward fields and woodland to the north. The Schlei itself reads as a pale ribbon that widens and narrows as it heads toward the sea.
The historic centre clusters around St. Peter's Cathedral, whose spire marks the old town's densest block of lanes.
